At least thirteen individuals perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
