The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
