France will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police representative states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official left office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
