Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
