Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.

Officers then located numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human blood.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking official commented the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in 2020.
